How to Transform a Dull Speaker Into a Dynamic Presenter

By Dan Janal Your Fearless PR Leader PR Leads www.prleads.com

PR LEADS conducted a phone seminar recently on ‘How to Transform a Dull Speaker Into a Dynamic Presenter’ with Patricia Fripp, a noted speech coach and the first female president of the National Speakers Association. Here are highlights from the session, as reported by Dan Janal, president and founder of PR LEADS.

The biggest mistake dull speakers make is to not have a clear message.

‘Describe in one sentence the basic message of what you want to say. If you can’t describe it in one sentence, it is obvious the audience will be confused,’ she said. ‘After you have this one premise, then you need to work on the framework. You fill in the framework with stories, examples and analogies because people don’t remember what we say, they remember what they see in their minds when we describe our points by using the stories.’

You don’t have to be a Hollywood actor to be dynamic, but anyone can learn to build rapport with audiences by using pauses, varying their pace and telling memorable stories.

Even speakers who use facts and figures can use Fripp’s techniques in story telling to connect emotionally as well as intellectually with the audiences.

She offers these exercises:

  • Make rehearsal a part of daily rituals
  • Read your speech out loud
  • Record yourself
  • Be a speech coach to others
  • Learn colorful and persuasive language
  • Watch movies for characters when they give a speech

The one-hour seminar is available on CD or cassette for $29.

Your seminar was excellent. As a professional trainer and speaker, I didn’t expect to learn much from Patricia. I was wrong. The seminar, and your ability to tease out the most from a highly accomplished guest, was worth dozens of times more than its cost. Her Q&A was amazing.
