Welcome, Susan.

SUSAN HARROW: I’m so happy to be here to talk about this for the very first time.

DAN JANAL: Great. We’re delighted to have you with us. Tell us about your background and your experience, have you spoken at the Learning Annex?

SUSAN HARROW: I’ve spoken for almost five years now and really I think it’s something that I had tried to get into at one point and had been rejected a number of times . I had pitched the Learning Annex about five different ideas and I never got a response. And then suddenly Elana Maggal ,who was the the program director at the time in San Francisco called me up because she had seen an article that I had written for a Speaker’s magazine and said, “Do you want to do a class on this topic?” and I said , “Sure.” One of the reasons why she had not accepted me all those times is she said you know what we have somebody covering PR right now and she made it sound like I was never ever going to get in because they had this PR person and she had it all wrapped up. But when she saw that I had written on another topic, not straight PR but another idea she thought there was room for two.

DAN JANAL: Oh, that’s great. Let’s take a step back and look at the Learning Annex and other adult learning centers in general. What’s so good about teaching at these places and why would you want to do it?

SUSAN HARROW: There are really four reasons. The first is back of the room sales, and I’ll talk about that a little bit more later because I’m sure that your listeners really want to know about that. But they sell thousands of dollars of products and services and also when you’re at higher levels like your clients, Hale Dwoskin, who is a New York Times best-selling author, is also a client of mine who got on the cover, they get a bigger percentage of the door. At the smaller levels you get a very small percentage. But also the adult learning centers and learning annexes do all of your publicity and all you do is show up and teach. Of course it helps if you do publicity too but they are the ones who are out there promoting you in the catalog and sometimes in newspapers and via email.
