The Adsense side of the coin is for website owners who are publishers who want to make money off the advertising. Google allows you to apply for an Adsense account and once approved you take a little snippet of HTML code slap it on your web page and they automatically, through the miracle of their Google Adsense bot can determine the content of your web page and deliver ads that are contextually relevant to your content. It’s absolutely brilliant.
What happens then is if somebody visits your website and they click on one of these Adsense ads, Google shares that particular ad with you. It’s like you’re saying, bye-bye to the visitors. They go off to the sponsor site and they leave a little change in your tip jar on the way out.
Dan Janal: And little is really the operative word here because I read through their instructions and everything, and by the way, just about anyone can get approved for this. Don’t worry it’s not some long dramatic form where you have to tell your whole life story or explain your business plan or anything. I think anyone can get it as long as you’re not a pornographer or an arms dealer or anything like that. Everyone here is more than well qualified because you’re putting up content sites.
But the real issue here is you never know how much people are paying for each of the ads or how much Google is giving you as a percentage. That’s just an article of faith that people click and you’re going to get some change but it could be some may be paid.
How does that all work?
Joel Comm: Well, it depends on the value of the key word. If the sponsor is perhaps just advertising a game site, there is not a lot of money in a lot of these game sites. You might only get a nickel or a dime per click. If on the other hand you are in a high end field such as the medical field or the legal profession, -
Well advertisers, for example, you remember the whole Vioxx hysteria just a few months ago? The attorneys just wanted to have a piece of that because that meant millions and millions of dollars for their clients and for themselves. They were willing to pay up to $80 per click for advertisements related to the Vioxx keyword.
You’ve got the whole range of value from a nickel the whole way up to $80 depending upon that keyword.
